History
There have been traces
of carriages since antiquity, important evidence of which was found in Pompeii
during the latest excavations, but it was not until the 1600s that this
splendid means of transport was used to explore ancient Europe, when the era of
grand tours began and continued for more than two centuries.
Nobles, rulers and
European intellectuals set off in their own carriages or with carriages that
provided public transport, to visit Europe, from Goethe to Giuseppe Principe di
Belmonte: the first intellectual recounted his journey from Munich to Palermo
in a carriage, as did the second Sicilian nobleman, who was an able politician
as well, makimg a grand tour reaching Switzerland, visiting the Empire, Hungary, Poland,
reaching Kiev, England, France and then returning home.
Travelling by carriage
stimulated the traveler's imagination as it allowed him to capture all the
nuances and differences he encountered along the way, so it was not a mere
transfer, but a continuous discovery of the places he crossed.
This means having the
opportunity to experience the same emotions felt by princes, princesses and men
of high rank while enjoying the flow of the road accompanied by the shuffling
of horses' hooves in tune with the rolling of the iron wheels.
Southern Italy has
been the destination of many people from northern Europe, in search of the
ancient civilization of which there are so many testimonies, but also in search
of long days with pleasant temperatures, of good food and wonderful landscapes.
There are so many
reasons why we can offer the visitor a coach trip that can be of one day, as
well as a whole week and even longer, crossing territories rich in history,
where nature is at its best, while enjoying world-famous cuisine.
Apulia, like Basilicata,
Molise, Campania, Calabria and Sicily are the places of our tours from the
Itria Valley tour, to the journey from Taranto to Santa Maria di Leuca, or from
Castel del Monte to Melfi up to Matera.
Land kissed by the
sun, surrounded by unique landscapes, staying in ancient “masserie” (typical
country settlements) or noble palaces, not as tourists but welcomed by families
as guests.
With this spirit we
welcome on our carriages friends who want to live in contact with nature,
discovering the surroundings accompanied by experts of the territory to learn
about its history, customs and traditions.
